The Places Where I’m From

The Places Where I’m From

Yep, I sure did redo this after hearing everyone else’s!

THE PLACES WHERE I’M FROM

I am from dust;

from undesirable and yet, irritatingly persistent.

I am from the yellow house with the brown brick and basketball hoop:

from large family gatherings, movie nights, and all kinds of music coming from record players, reel-to-reels, and tape decks.

I’m from the land of the Yankton Sioux.

From rolling prairies, not-so-clear lakes, and ever-present winds.

I am from water: fluid, healing, destructive.

I’m from late-night Euchre games and laughing til you cry;

from David and Ann, T.N. and Mary Lou, AC and Johnnie.

I’m from the hard workers and self givers;

from unmet expectations and ”it’s actually good to be different.”

I’m from Jesus followers and grace reliance.

I’m from Wisconsin, Alabama, and Mississippi; from beer brats, cheese curds, chicken and dumplings, black-eyed peas, and blackberry cobbler;

from the time when Grandpa AC revived my dad at his birth.

I am from the tinkerers and “there’s nothing we can’t fix”;

from dad’s garage; from wrenching, wet-sanding, and primer; from oil, paint, and exhaust fumes; from oldies on the radio, family stories, and life lessons.
