I would like to begin the “descending the iceberg” work by specifically looking at the topic of how being pro-life was a core value in my ARC background. I will reflect on the messages I received from my family; the training I received as a young leader in the evangelical para church world; and the vision casting that has shaped my current context.
- Unpack how my parents’ value of being pro-life shaped my childhood and youth and impacted my faith and worldview.
- Journal about the messages I received as a child, a teenage girl, and as a young woman.
- Interview my mom on her upbringing.
“What / when did you learn about human sexuality?”
“What were you taught about abortion?”
“What were your experiences of purity culture?”
“What do you wish for your grandkids?”
- Interview my sister on her experience.
- Extrapolate on how the pro-life value was tied to purity culture, the discipleship of making right choices, the role of shame and the fear of spiritual failure.
- Explore how the core value of being pro-life shaped my first experiences in ministry.
- How did I view choices and behavior next to faith and belief?
- How did I bring these views into the context of working with teenagers?
- How do I continue to let these values shape my worldview and interactions with others?
- Current Context
- Consider the positives of my background and reflect on what still lingers.
- Write on the process of moving from anti-abortion to an expanded definition of being pro-life.
- Do portions of the ARC Personal Examination and Common Table with a small group in church.
- Reflect on our discoveries of ARC in relation to our Church values, vision statement and ministry.
